G4TV Returning in 2021
Gamers in their late 20s and 30s have rejoiced at the teaser announcement regarding the return of G4TV. This was a former network of television that centred around video game news, and reviews. Iconic shows like Attack of the Show & Reviews on the Run would prompt the careers of notable actors like Alison Brie and Olivia Munn. Their teaser video lasts one-minute, not clarifying specific details on how the revival of G4TV will unfold.
First released to IGN, then hours later exposed onto YouTube, the computer-generation teaser trailer scans an abandoned warehouse that resembles a TV studio. Equipment for older cameras is located, which extends towards gaming artefacts that were left behind on-set. One moment showcase two NES Controllers before panning towards a CRT Television, which displayed a game of pong.
These are apparent references to Attack of the Show & Reviews on the Run, G4TVs two most popular shows in the decade’s past. This teaser video finished with the “G4” Logo glitching in-and-out of the CRT Television. A tagline reading that G4 never stopped playing is the final shot before fading to black.
The History of G4TV
Increasing popularity in video games saw Comcast Cable emphasize their desire for a network centred around gaming subject matters. Plans to launch a gaming network began in the 2000s, being postponed after the 9/11 attacks, and ultimately releasing to viewers by 2002. Multiple shows were immediately introduced to “1st Generation Console Gamers”, who engaged with the Xbox and PlayStation. Americans received X-Play, and Attack of the Show through G4TV. However, Canadians got the added benefit of witnessing Reviews of the Run.
Rating dropped significantly for G4TV with the rise of digital media sources, forcing the Comcast Company to announce the closure of their gaming network for Summer 2014. It’s speculated that the future history of G4TV will centre around NBCs Peacock, a free streaming service that plans to revolutionize how entertainment is introduced to consumers.
The Co-Host of Attack of the Show, Kevin Pereira, expressed his interest over the restart of G4TV through Twitter. Pereira has been non-existent throughout the gaming industry. It’d be surprising if NBC Peacock rehired him for a hosting position, with most not knowing his previous role with G4TV for twelve years.
